We haue referred to this place the signe of the anker, in token of the hope of our salua- tion in Iesus Christ, who is our most certaine and sure refuge, and to whom we are to flie in all extremities. True it is, that Seleucus king of Siria vsed the portrature of an anker in his signet: but this he did for that cause onely, for that the southsayers and wise men had told hold him, the anker did represent or sig- nifie his kingdome. Moreouer, Titus the Em- peror vsed the same cognizance, but in ano- ther respect, as afterwards we will declare else where. Finally, manie Admirals haue vsed and do to this vse the same in token (as it should seeme) of their office, and authoritie in the common wealth.
