<p>Svppose you Sirs, those mimicke Apes you meet<lb/> In strange fantasticke habits? or the Rabble,<lb/> That in gay clothes embroyder out the street,<lb/> Are truely of Worshipfull or Honorable?<lb/> Or can you thinke, that, To be borne the Sonne<lb/> Of some rich Alderman, or ancient Peere,<lb/> Or that the Fame our Predecessors wonne<lb/> May claime those Wreathes which true Deserving weare?<lb/> Is Honour due to those, who spend their dayes<lb/> In courting one another? or consuming<lb/> Their Fortunes and themselves, on Drabbs and Playes?<lb/> In sleeping, drinking, and Tobacco-fuming?<lb/> Not so. For, (though such Fooles, like children, place<lb/> Gay Titles on each other) Wise-men know<lb/> What slaves they be; how miserably-base;<lb/> And, where such Attributes would better show.<lb/> An idle Body clothes a vitious Minde;<lb/> And, what (at best) is purchac'd by the same,<lb/> Is nothing else, but stinking Smoke and Winde;<lb/> Or froth'e Bubbles of an empty Fame.<lb/> True Glory, none did ever purchase, yet,<lb/> Till, to be Vertuous they could first attaine,<lb/> Nor shall those men faire Vertues favuor get,<lb/> Who labour not, such Dignities to gaine.<lb/> And, this Impresa doth inferre no lesse:<lb/> For, by the Spade, is Labour here implide;<lb/> The Snake, a vertuous Prudence, doth expresse;<lb/> And, Glorie, by the Wreath is Typifide.<lb/> For, where a vertuous Industry is found,<lb/> She, shall with Wreaths of Glory, thus be crown'd.<lb/> </p>
