TEXT_EXPL_XML <p>Unhappy men are they, whose Ignorance<lb/>
So slaves them to the Fortunes of the Time,<lb/>
That they (attending on the Lot of Chance)<lb/>
Neglect by Vertue, and Deserts, to clime.<lb/>
Poore Heights they be which Fortune reares unto;<lb/>
And, fickle is the Favour she bestowes:<lb/>
                                To-day, she makes; to-morrow, doth undoe;<lb/>
Builds up, and in an instant overthrowes.<lb/>
On easie Wheeles, to Wealth, and Honours high,<lb/>
She windes men oft, before they be aware;<lb/>
And, when they dreame of most Prosperitie,<lb/>
Downe, headlong, throwes them lower then they were.<lb/>
You, then, that seeke a more assur'd estate,<lb/>
On good, and honest Objects, fixe your Minde,<lb/>
And follow Vertue, that you may a Fate<lb/>
Exempt from feare of Change, or Dangers, finde.<lb/>
For, he that's Vertuous, whether high or low<lb/>
His Fortune seemes (or whether foule or faire<lb/>
His Path he findes) or whether friend, or foe,<lb/>
The World doth prove; regards it not a haire.<lb/>
His Losse is Gaine; his Poverty is Wealth;<lb/>
The Worlds Contempt, he makes his Diadem;<lb/>
In Sicknesse, he rejoyceth, as in Health:<lb/>
Yea, Death it selfe, becommeth Life, to him.<lb/>
He feares no disrespect, no bitter scorne,<lb/>
Nor subtile plottings, nor Oppressions force;<lb/>
Nay, though the World should topsie-turvie turne,<lb/>
It cannot fright him, nor divert his Course.<lb/>
Above all Earthly powres his Vertue reares him;<lb/>
And, up with Eglets wings, to Heav'n it beares him.<lb/>
