<p>Well-worthy of our better Heeding were,<lb/> That Holy Pen-mans Lesson, who hath sayd,<lb/> We should be slow to Speake, and swift to Heare;<lb/> If, well, the nature of the Tongue we waigh'd.<lb/> For, if we let it loose, it getteth Wings,<lb/> And, flies with wanton Carelesnesse, about;<lb/> It prateth in all places, of All things;<lb/> Tells Truth and Lyes, and babbleth Secrets out.<lb/> To speake, of things unknowne, it taketh leave,<lb/> As if it had all Knowledge in Possession;<lb/> And, Mysteries (which no Man can conceive)<lb/> Are thought fit Objects for the Tongues Expression.<lb/> With Truth it mixeth Errors; sayes, unsayes;<lb/> And, is the Preacher of all Heresies.<lb/> That Heart, which gives it motion, it betrayes;<lb/> And, utters Curses, Oathes, and Blasphemies.<lb/> It spreads all Slanders, which base Envie raiseth;<lb/> It moveth Anger, and begetteth Hates:<lb/> It blameth Vertue; filthy Deeds it praiseth;<lb/> And, causeth Vproares, Murthers, and Debates.<lb/> Yea, tis the chiefest Factor for the Devill;<lb/> And, yet, with speeches feignedly-sincere,<lb/> It otherwhile reproveth what is Evill,<lb/> And, will in Lowly-words, a Saint appeare.<lb/> Now this is knowne; we, next of all, should learne,<lb/> How we may shunne the Mischiefe being knowne;<lb/> How, we bad Tongues, in Others, may discerne;<lb/> And, how to guide and moderate our Owne:<lb/> And, reason good; for, none can apprehend,<lb/> What Mischiefe doth an Evill Tongue attend.<lb/> </p>
