TEXT_EXPL_XML <p>A heart, which bore the figure of an Eye<lb/>
                                Wide open to the Sunne; by some, was us'd,<lb/>
                                When in an Emblem, they would signifie<lb/>
                                A Minde, which on Celestiall Matters mus'd:<lb/>
                                Implying, by the same, that there is nought<lb/>
                                Which in this lower Orbe, our Eyes can see,<lb/>
                                So fit an Object for a manly thought,<lb/>
                                As those things, which in Heav'n above us be.<lb/>
                                God, gave Mankinde (above all other Creatures)<lb/>
                                A lovely Forme, and upward-looking Eye,<lb/>
                                (Among the rest of his peculiar Features)<lb/>
                                That he might lift his Countenance on high:<lb/>
                                And (having view'd the Beauty, which appeares<lb/>
                                Within the outward Sights circumference)<lb/>
                                That he might elevate above the Sphaeres,<lb/>
                                The piercing Eye, of his Intelligence.<lb/>
                                Then, higher, and still higher strive to raise<lb/>
                                His Contemplations Eyes, till they ascend<lb/>
                                To gaine a glimpse of those eternall Rayes,<lb/>
                                To which all undepraved Spirits tend.<lb/>
                                For, 'tis the proper nature of the Minde<lb/>
                                (Till fleshly Thoughts corrupt it) to despise<lb/>
                                Those Lusts whereto the Body stands inclin'd;<lb/>
                                And labour alwayes, upward to arise.<lb/>
                                Some, therefore, thought those Goblins which appeare<lb/>
                                To haunt old Graves and Tombes, are Soules of such,<lb/>
                                Who to these loathsome places doomed were,<lb/>
                                Because, they doted on the Flesh too much.<lb/>
                                But, sure weare, well-minded Men shall goe<lb/>
                                To live above, when others bide below.<lb/>
