<p>Some Foolish-Boyes (and such a Boy was I)<lb/> When they at Schoole have certaine houres to passe,<lb/> (To which they are compell'd unwillingly)<lb/> Much time they spend in shaking of the Glasse:<lb/> Thus, what they practise, to make-short their stay,<lb/> Prolongs it more; for while they seeke to force<lb/> The Sands, to runne more speedily away,<lb/> They interrupt them; and, they passe the worse.<lb/> Right so, in other things, with us it fares;<lb/> (And, seeming wise, we act a foolish part)<lb/> For, otherwhile, what Time alone prepares,<lb/> We seeke to make the subject of an Art.<lb/> Sometimes, by Rashnesse, we endeavour what<lb/> We ought with Leisure, and Advice, to doe:<lb/> But, if a good Successe doth follow, that,<lb/> Our Wit was nothing helpefull thereunto.<lb/> Sometime, againe, we prosecute a thing<lb/> By Violence; when our desir'd effect,<lb/> No other meanes so well to passe can bring,<lb/> As Love and Gentlenesse, which we neglect.<lb/> But, let this Emblem teach us to regard<lb/> What Way of Working, to each Worke pertaines:<lb/> So, though some Portion of our Hopes be barr'd,<lb/> We shall not, altogether, lose our paines.<lb/> Some things are strong, and, othersome are weake;<lb/> With Labour, some; and, some with Ease be wrought:<lb/> Although the Reed will bend, the Kexe will breake;<lb/> And, what mends one thing, makes another naught.<lb/> Marke this; And, when much Haste will marre thy Speed,<lb/> That, then, thou take good Leisure; take thou Heed.<lb/> </p> |
