<p>Among the many Faylings of the Time,<lb/> This Emblem giveth Cause to mention one,<lb/> Which, unto me, doth seeme the greater Crime,<lb/> Because, to many, it appeareth none.<lb/> I finde, that petty things are so neglected<lb/> (Well nigh of all) in Losings and in Winnings,<lb/> As if, what ere they thought to have effected,<lb/> Subsisted without Members, or Beginnings.<lb/> The Man, that loseth every Month a Penny,<lb/> May salve-up Twelve-months Losses, with a Shilling.<lb/> But, if of other Losses he hath many,<lb/> To save a Pin, at length, he shall be willing.<lb/> For, he that sees his Wine-fill'd Vessell drop,<lb/> (Although a Drop, in value, be but small)<lb/> Should, thence, Occasion take, the Leake to stop,<lb/> Lest many Droppings draine him drye of all.<lb/> Moreover, they, that will to Greatnesse rise,<lb/> A Course, not much unlike to this, must keepe:<lb/> They ought not Small-Beginnings to despise;<lb/> Nor, strive to runne, before they learne to creepe.<lb/> By many single Eares, together brought,<lb/> The Hand is fill'd; by Handfulls, we may gaine<lb/> A Sheafe; with many Sheaves a Barne is fraught:<lb/> Thus, oft, by Little, we doe much obtaine.<lb/> Consider this; And, though I wish not thee<lb/> To take, of Trifling-things, too great a care;<lb/> Yet, know thus much (for truth) it best will bee,<lb/> If all things may be weighed as they are:<lb/> By slender Losses, great-ones are begunne;<lb/> By many trifling Gaines, much Wealth is wonne.<lb/> </p> |
