<p>When I observe the Melanchollie Owles,<lb/> Considering with what patience, they sustaine<lb/> The many clamours, of the greater Fowles ;<lb/> And, how the little Chirpers, they disdaine:<lb/> When I remember, how, their Injuries<lb/> They sleight, (who, causeles give them an offence)<lb/> Vouchsafing, scarce to cast aside their eyes<lb/> To looke upon that foolish Insolence.<lb/> Me thinkes, by their Example, I am taught<lb/> To sleight the slaunders of Injurious Tongues ;<lb/> To set the scoffes of Censurers, at naught,<lb/> And, with a brave neglect, to beare out Wrongs.<lb/> Hee, doubtles, whom the Psalmist, long agoe,<lb/> Vnto a lonely Desert-Owle compar'd,<lb/> Did practise thus; And, when I can doe so,<lb/> I, shall for all affronts, become prepar'd.<lb/> And, (though, this Doctrine, Flesh and blood gaine-say)<lb/> Yet, sure, to stopp the malice of Despight,<lb/> There is no better, (nay, no other) way:<lb/> Since, Rage by Opposition gathers Might.<lb/> Good God! vouchsafe, sufficient grace and strength,<lb/> That (though I have not yet, such Patience gott)<lb/> I may attaine this happy gift, at length;<lb/> And, finde the cause, that, yet, I have it not.<lb/> Though me, my Neighbours, and my Foes revile;<lb/> Make me of all their words, a Patient-bearer :<lb/> When er'e I suffer, let me be, the while,<lb/> As is the silent Lambe before the Shearer.<lb/> So; though my speakings, cannot quiet any,<lb/> My Patience may restraine the Tongues of many.<lb/> </p>
