<p>A Sword unsheathed, and a strangling-Snare,<lb/> Is figur'd here; which, in dumbe-shewes, doe preach,<lb/> Of what the Malefactor should beware;<lb/> And, they doe threaten too, aswell as Teach.<lb/> For, some there are, (would God, that summe were lesse)<lb/> Whom, neither good Advise, nor, wholesome Lawe,<lb/> Can turne from Pathwaies of Vnrighteousnesse,<lb/> If Death, or Tortures, keepe them not in awe.<lb/> These, are not they, whose Conscience for the sake<lb/> Of Goodnesse onely, Godlinesse, pursues;<lb/> But, these are they, who never scruple make<lb/> What Guilt, but, what great punishment ensues.<lb/> For such as these, this Emblem was prepar'd:<lb/> And, for their sakes, in places eminent,<lb/> Are all our Gallow-trees, and Gibbets, rear'd;<lb/> That, by the sight of them, they might repent.<lb/> Let, therefore, those who feele their hearts inclin'd<lb/> To any kind of Death-deserving-Crime,<lb/> (When they behold this Emblem ) change their mind,<lb/> Lest, they (too late) repent, another time.<lb/> And, let not those our Counsell, now, contemne,<lb/> Who, doome poore Theeves to death; yet, guilty be<lb/> Of more, then most of those whom they Condemne:<lb/> But, let them Learne their perill to foresee,<lb/> For, though a little while, they may have hope<lb/> To seeme upright, (when they are nothing lesse)<lb/> And, scape the Sword, the Gallowes, and the Rope,<lb/> There is a Iudge, who sees their wickednesse;<lb/> And, when grim Death, shall summon them, from hence,<lb/> They will be fully plagu'd for their offence.<lb/> </p>
