<p>I thinke you would be wise; for, most men seeme<lb/> To make of Knowledge very great esteeme.<lb/> If such be your desires, this Emblem view;<lb/> And, marke how well the Figures, counsell you.<lb/> Wee by the Bird of Athens, doe expresse,<lb/> That painefull, and that usefull watchfulnesse,<lb/> Which ought to bee enjoyned, unto them,<lb/> Who seeke a place, in Wisdomes Academ.<lb/> For, as an Owle mewes up her selfe by Day,<lb/> And watcheth in the Night, to get her prey;<lb/> Ev'n so, good Students, neither must be such,<lb/> As daily gad; or nightly sleepe too much.<lb/> That open-booke, on which the Owle is perch'd,<lb/> Affords a Morall, worthy to be search'd:<lb/> For, it informes, and, darkly doth advise,<lb/> Your Watchings be not after Vanities;<lb/> (Or, like their Wakings, who turne dayes to nights,<lb/> In following their unlawfull appetites)<lb/> And, that, in keeping Home, you doe not spend<lb/> Your houres in sloth, or, to some fruitlesse end.<lb/> But, rather in good Studies ; and, in that,<lb/> By which, true Knowledge, is arrived at.<lb/> For, if your Studies, and your Wakings, bee<lb/> To this intent; you shall that Path-way see<lb/> To Wisdome, and to Honour, which was found,<lb/> Of them, whose Knowledge hath been most renownd.<lb/> But, if your Watchings, and Retyrednesse,<lb/> Be for your Lust, or, out of Sottishnesse ;<lb/> You are not, what th' Athenian-Owle implies,<lb/> But, what our English-Owlet signifies.<lb/> </p>
