<p>Lord! what a coyle is here! and what a puther,<lb/> To save and get? to scratch and scrape together<lb/> The Rubbish of the world? and, to acquire<lb/> Those vanities, which Fancie doth desire?<lb/> What Violence is used, and what Cunning ?<lb/> What nightly Watchings, and what daily Running ?<lb/> What sorrowes felt? what difficulties entred?<lb/> What losses hazarded? what perills ventred?<lb/> And, still, how sottishly, doe wee persever<lb/> (By all the power, and meanes wee can endeaver)<lb/> To wheele our selves, in a perpetuall Round,<lb/> In quest of that, which never will be found?<lb/> In Objects, here on Earth, we seeke to finde<lb/> That perfect sollidnesse, which is confinde,<lb/> To things in Heaven, though every day we see,<lb/> What emptinesse, and faylings, in them be.<lb/> To teach us better; this, our Emblem, here,<lb/> Assayes to make terrestriall things appeare<lb/> The same they be, (both to our eares and eyes)<lb/> That, wee may rightly their Condition prize.<lb/> The best, which of earths best things, wee can say,<lb/> Is this; that they are Grasse, and will be Hay.<lb/> The rest, may be resembled to the Smoke,<lb/> (Which doth but either blind the sight, or choke)<lb/> Or else, to that uncleanly Mushrum-ball,<lb/> Which, in some Countries, wee a Puff-soyst call;<lb/> Whose out-side, is a nastie rotten skin,<lb/> Containing durt, or smoking-dust, within.<lb/> This is my mind ; if wrong you thinke I've done them,<lb/> Be Fooles ; and, at your perils, dote upon them.<lb/> </p>
