<p>Here, we an Aged-man described have,<lb/> That hath one foot, already, in the Grave :<lb/> And, if you marke it (though the Sunne decline,<lb/> And horned Cynthia doth begin to shine)<lb/> With open booke, and, with attentive eyes,<lb/> Himselfe, to compasse Knowledge, he applyes:<lb/> And, though that Evening, end his last of dayes,<lb/> Yet, I will study, more to learne, he sayes.<lb/> From this, we gather, that, while time doth last,<lb/> The time of learning, never will be past;<lb/> And, that, each houre, till we our life lay downe,<lb/> Still, something, touching life, is to be knowne.<lb/> When he was old, wise Cato learned Greeke:<lb/> But, we have aged-folkes, that are to seeke<lb/> Of that, which they have much more cause to learne;<lb/> Yet, no such minde in them, wee shall discerne.<lb/> For, that, which they should studie in their prime,<lb/> Is, oft, deferred, till their latter time :<lb/> And, then, old age, unfit for learning, makes them,<lb/> Or, else, that common dulnesse overtakes them,<lb/> Which makes ashamed, that it should be thought,<lb/> They need, like little children, to be taught.<lb/> And, so, out of this world, they doe returne<lb/> As wise, as in the weeke, when they were borne.<lb/> God, grant me grace, to spend my life-time so,<lb/> That I my duety still may seeke to know ;<lb/> And, that, I never, may so farre proceed,<lb/> To thinke, that I, more Knowledge, doe not need:<lb/> But, in Experience, may continue growing,<lb/> Till I am fill'd with fruits of pious-knowing.<lb/> </p> |
