<p>When you have heeded, by your Eyes of sense,<lb/> This Helmet, hiving of a Swarme of Bees,<lb/> Consider, what may gather'd be from thence,<lb/> And, what your Eye of Vnderstanding sees.<lb/> That Helmet, and, those other Weapons, there,<lb/> Betoken Warre ; the Honey-making, Flyes,<lb/> An Emblem of a happy Kingdome, are,<lb/> Injoying Peace, by painfull Industries:<lb/> And, when, all these together are exprest,<lb/> As in this Emblem, where the Bees, doe seeme<lb/> To make their dwelling, in a Plumed-Crest,<lb/> A Morall is implyed, worth esteeme.<lb/> For, these inferre, mysteriously, to me,<lb/> That, Peace, and Art, and Thrift, most firme abides,<lb/> In those Re-publikes, where, Armes cherisht bee;<lb/> And, where, true Martiall-discipline, resides.<lb/> When, of their Stings, the Bees, disarm'd, become,<lb/> They, who, on others Labours, use to prey,<lb/> Incourag'd are, with violence, to come,<lb/> And, beare their Honey, and, their Waxe, away.<lb/> So when a People, meerely, doe affect<lb/> To gather Wealth; and (foolishly secure)<lb/> Defences necessary, quite neglect;<lb/> Their Foes, to spoyle their Land, it will allure.<lb/> Long Peace, brings Warre ; and, Warre, brings Peace, againe:<lb/> For, when the smart of Warfare seizeth on them,<lb/> They crye, Alarme ; and, then, to fight, are faine,<lb/> Vntill, their Warre, another Peace, hath wonne them;<lb/> And, out of their old rusty Helmets, then,<lb/> New Bees doe swarme, and, fall to worke agen. </p>
