<p>These, are the great'st Afflictions, most men have,<lb/> Ev'n from their Nursing-cradle, to their Grave :<lb/> Yet, both so needfull are, I cannot see,<lb/> How either of them, may well spared bee.<lb/> The Rod is that, which, most our Child-hood feares;<lb/> And, seemes the great'st Affliction that it beares:<lb/> That, which to Man-hood, is a plague, as common<lb/> (And, more unsufferable) is a Woman.<lb/> Yet, blush not Ladies ; neither frowne, I pray,<lb/> That, thus of Women, I presume to say;<lb/> Nor, number mee, as yet, among your foes ;<lb/> For, I am more your friend, then you suppose:<lb/> Nor smile ye Men, as if, from hence, ye had<lb/> An Argument, that Woman kinde were bad.<lb/> The Birch, is blamelesse (yea, by nature, sweet,<lb/> And gentle) till, with stubborne Boyes, it meet:<lb/> But, then, it smarts. So, Women, will be kinde,<lb/> Vntill, with froward Husbands, they are joyn'd:<lb/> And, then indeed (perhaps) like Birchen boughes,<lb/> (VVhich, else, had beene a trimming, to their House)<lb/> They, sometimes prove, sharpe whips, and Rods, to them,<lb/> That Wisdome, and, Instruction doe contemne.<lb/> A Woman, was not given for Correction ;<lb/> But, rather for a furtherance to Perfection :<lb/> A precious Balme of love, to cure Mans griefe;<lb/> And, of his Pleasures, to become the chiefe.<lb/> If, therefore, she occasion any smart,<lb/> The blame, he merits, wholly, or in part:<lb/> For, like sweet Honey, she, good Stomackes, pleases;<lb/> But, paines the Body, subject to Diseases. </p>
