<p>We doe acknowledge (as this Emblem showes)<lb/> That Fruits and Flowres, and many pleasant-things,<lb/> From out the Ground, in ev'ry season growes;<lb/> And, that unto their being, helpe it brings.<lb/> Yet, of it selfe, the Ground, we know is dull,<lb/> And, but a Willing-patient, whereupon<lb/> The Sunne, with Beames, and Vertues wonderfull,<lb/> Prepareth, and effecteth, what is done.<lb/> We, likewise, doe acknowledge, that our eyes<lb/> Indowed are with faculties of Seeing,<lb/> And, with some other nat'rall properties,<lb/> Which are as much our owne, as is our Being.<lb/> However, till the Sunne imparts his light,<lb/> We finde, that we in darkenesse doe remaine,<lb/> Obscured in an everlasting night;<lb/> And, boast our Seeing-faculties, in vaine.<lb/> So, we, by nature, have some nat'rall powers:<lb/> But, Grace, must those abilities of ours<lb/> First move; and, guide them, still, in moving, thus,<lb/> To worke with God, when God shall worke on us:<lb/> For, God so workes, that, no man he procures<lb/> Against his nature, ought to chuse, or shun:<lb/> But, by his holy-Spirit, him allures;<lb/> And, with sweet mildnesse, proveth ev'ry one.<lb/> The Sunne is faultlesse of it, when the birth<lb/> Of some bad Field, is nothing else but Weeds :<lb/> For, by the selfe-same Sun shine, fruitfull Earth<lb/> Beares pleasant Crops, and plentifully breeds.<lb/> Thus, from our selves, our Vices have increase,<lb/> Our Vertues, from the Sunne of Righteousnesse. </p>
