<p>This is the Poets-horse ; a Palfray, Sirs,<lb/> (That may be ridden, without rod or spurres)<lb/> Abroad, more famous then Bucephalus,<lb/> Though, not so knowne, as Banks his horse, with us;<lb/> Or some of those fleet-horses, which of late,<lb/> Have runne their Masters, out of their estate.<lb/> For, those, and Hobby-horses, best befit<lb/> The note, and practice of their moderne wit,<lb/> Who, what this Horse might meane, no knowledge had,<lb/> Vntill, a Taverne-signe, they saw it made.<lb/> Yet, this old Emblem (worthy veneration)<lb/> Doth figure out, that winged-contemplation,<lb/> On which the Learned mount their best Invention,<lb/> And, climbe the Hills of highest Apprehension.<lb/> This is the nimble Gennet, which doth carry,<lb/> Their Fancie, thorow Worlds imaginary;<lb/> And, by Idaeas feigned, shewes them there,<lb/> The nature of those Truths, that reall are.<lb/> By meanes of this, our Soules doe come to know<lb/> A thousand secrets, in the Deeps below;<lb/> Things, here on Earth, and, things above the Skyes,<lb/> On which, we never fixed, yet, our eyes.<lb/> No thorny, miery, sheepe, nor craggy place,<lb/> Can interrupt this Courser, in his race:<lb/> For, that, which others, in their passage troubles,<lb/> Augments his courage, and his vigour doubles.<lb/> Thus, fares the Minde, infus'd with brave desires;<lb/> It flies through Darkenesse, Dangers, Flouds, and Fires:<lb/> And, in despight of what her ayme resisteth:<lb/> Pursues her hopes, and takes the way she listeth. </p>
