<p>Though I am somewhat soberer to day,<lb/> I have been (I confesse) as mad as they,<lb/> Who think those men, that large Possessions have,<lb/> Gay Clothes, fine Furnitures, and Houses brave,<lb/> Are those (nay more, that they alone are those)<lb/> On whom, the stile of Rich, we should impose.<lb/> But, having, by experience, understood<lb/> His words, who sayd, his troubles did him good,<lb/> I, now perceive, the Worldly-rich are poore,<lb/> Vnlesse of Sorrowes, also, they have store.<lb/> Till from the Straw, the Flaile, the Corne doth beat;<lb/> Vntill the Chaffe, be purged from the Wheat,<lb/> Yea, till the Mill, the Graines in pieces teare,<lb/> The richnesse of the Flowre, will scarce appeare.<lb/> So, till mens persons great Afflictions touch<lb/> (If worth be found) their worth is not so much,<lb/> Because, like Wheat, in Straw, they have not, yet,<lb/> That value, which in threshing, they may get.<lb/> For, till the bruising Flailes of God 's Corrections,<lb/> Have threshed out of us our vaine Affections ;<lb/> Till those Corruptions, which doe misbecome us,<lb/> Are by thy Sacred-spirit, winnowed from us;<lb/> Vntill, from us, the straw of Worldly-treasures ;<lb/> Till all the dusty Chaffe of empty Pleasures ;<lb/> Yea, till his Flaile, upon us, he doth lay,<lb/> To thresh the huske of this our Flesh away;<lb/> And, leave the Soule uncover'd; nay, yet more,<lb/> Till God shall make, our very Spirit poore;<lb/> We shall not up to highest Wealth aspire:<lb/> But, then we shall; and, that is my desire. </p>
