<p>Lord, what a coyle men keepe, and, with what care<lb/> Their Pistolls, and, their Swords doe they prepare,<lb/> To be in readinessse? and, how they load<lb/> Themselves with Irons, when they ride abroad?<lb/> How wise and wary too, can they become,<lb/> To fortifie their persons up at home,<lb/> With lockes, and barres? and such domestick-Armes,<lb/> As may secure their bodies, there, from harmes?<lb/> However, when all's done, we see, their foes<lb/> Breake in, sometimes, and worke their overthrowes.<lb/> For, though (about themselves, with Cable-quoiles,<lb/> They could inclose a hundred thousand miles)<lb/> The gunshot of a slanderous tongue, may smite,<lb/> Their Fame quite through it, to the very White.<lb/> Yea, more (though, there, from others, they were free)<lb/> They wounded, by themselves, to death might be,<lb/> Except their Innocence, more guards them, than<lb/> The strength of twenty royall Armies, can.<lb/> If, therefore, thou thy Spoylers, wilt beguile,<lb/> Thou must be armed, like this Crocodile ;<lb/> Ev'n with such nat'rall Armour (ev'ry day)<lb/> As no man can bestowe, or take away:<lb/> For, spitefull Malice, at one time or other,<lb/> Will pierce all borrowed Armours, put together.<lb/> Without, let Patience durifie thy Skin;<lb/> Let Innocencie, line thy heart within ;<lb/> Let constant Fortitude, unite them so,<lb/> That, they may breake the force of ev'ry blow:<lb/> And, when thou thus art arm'd, if ill thou speed;<lb/> Let me sustaine the Mischiefe, in thy steed. </p> |
