<p>That Head, which in his Temple, heretofore,<lb/> The well-knowne figure of old Ianus bore,<lb/> Retain'd the forme, which pictur'd here you finde;<lb/> A Face before him, and a Face behinde.<lb/> And this old Hieroglyphicke doth comprize<lb/> A multitude of Heathenish Mysteries;<lb/> Which, wee omitting, will insist on what<lb/> This Emblem's Motto, chiefely poynteth at.<lb/> In true Divinity, 'tis God alone,<lb/> To whom, all hidden things are truely knowne.<lb/> Hee, onely, is that ever-present-being,<lb/> Who, by the vertue of his pow'r all-seeing,<lb/> Beholds, at one aspect, all things that are,<lb/> That ever shall be, and that ever were.<lb/> But, in a Morall-sense, we may apply<lb/> This double-face, that man to signifie,<lb/> Who (whatsoere he undertakes to doe)<lb/> Lookes, both before him, and behinde him, too.<lb/> For, he shall never fruitfully forecast<lb/> Affaires to come, who mindes not what is past :<lb/> And, such as doe not, oft, before them looke,<lb/> May lose the labour, that's already tooke.<lb/> By, sometimes, looking backward, we behold<lb/> Those things, which have been done in times of old ;<lb/> By looking wisely forward, we foresee<lb/> Such matters, as in future-times will bee:<lb/> And, thus, we doe not onely fruits receive,<lb/> From that short space of time, in which we live;<lb/> But, by this meanes, we likewise have a share,<lb/> In times to come, and, times that passed are.<lb/> </p> |
