<p>Svch pleasant Flowres, as here are shadow'd out<lb/> (Full grown, well-trim'd, and strongly fenc'd about)<lb/> At first, perchance, had planting (where they stand)<lb/> And, husbanding, by some good Gard'ners hand:<lb/> But, when to perfect ripenesse, they are grown,<lb/> (And, spread forth leaves, and blossomes, fully blowne)<lb/> They draw it from the Vertue of the Sunne,<lb/> Which worketh, when the Gard'ners worke is done:<lb/> For, lost were all his Travaile, and his praise,<lb/> Vnlesse that Planet cheare them with his rayes.<lb/> In this our Pilgrimage, it fares with us<lb/> (In all our hopes, and all our labours ) thus.<lb/> For, whatsoever bus'nesse wee intend,<lb/> On God, our good successes doe depend.<lb/> Our Hands may build; but, structures vaine we make,<lb/> Till God, to be Chiefe builder, undertake.<lb/> To wall a City, wee may beare the cost;<lb/> But, he must guard it, or, the Towne is lost:<lb/> The Plow-man useth diligence to sowe;<lb/> But, God must blesse it, or, no Corne will grow:<lb/> Yea, though Paul plant, and, though Apollo water,<lb/> They spend their sweat, upon a fruitlesse matter,<lb/> Till God from heaven, their labours please to blesse,<lb/> And crowne their travailes, with a good increase.<lb/> Let, therefore, those that flourish, like this Flowre,<lb/> (And, may be wither'd, e're another houre)<lb/> Give God the praise, for making of their Seeds<lb/> Bring forth sweet Flowres, that, else, had proved Weeds:<lb/> And, me despite not, though I thrive not so;<lb/> For, when, God pleaseth, I shall flourish too.<lb/> </p>
