<p>A travailer, when he must undertake<lb/> To seek his passage, o're some Frozen Lake,<lb/> With leisure, and with care, he will assay<lb/> The glassy smoothnesse of that Icie-way,<lb/> Lest he may slip, by walking over-fast;<lb/> Or, breake the crackling Pavement, by his hast:<lb/> And, so (for want of better taking heed)<lb/> Incurre the mischiefes of Vnwary-speed.<lb/> We are all Travellers ; and, all of us<lb/> Have many passages, as dangerous,<lb/> As Frozen lakes ; and, Slippery-wayes, we tread,<lb/> In which our Lives may soone be forfeited,<lb/> (With all our hopes of Life-eternall, too)<lb/> Unlesse, we well consider what we doe.<lb/> There is no private Way, or publicke Path,<lb/> But rubs, or holes, or slipp'rinesse it hath,<lb/> Whereby, wee shall with Mischiefes meet; unlesse,<lb/> Wee walke it, with a stedfast-warmesse.<lb/> The steps to Honour, are on Pinacles<lb/> Compos'd of melting Snow, and Isicles;<lb/> And, they who tread not nicely on their tops,<lb/> Shall on a suddaine slip from all their hopes.<lb/> Yea, ev'n that way, which is both sure and holy,<lb/> And, leades the Minde from Vanities and Folly,<lb/> Is with so many other Path-wayes crost,<lb/> As, that, by Rashnesse, it may soone be lost;<lb/> Vnlesse, we well deliberate, upon<lb/> Those Tracts, in which our Ancestours have gone:<lb/> And, they who with more haste, then heed, will runne,<lb/> May lose the way, in which they well begunne.<lb/> </p> |
