<p>When Phoebus with a cheerefull eye, beholds<lb/> The Flow'r-embroydred earth, and freely spreads<lb/> His beames abroad; behold, the Marigolds<lb/> Beginne to reare their low-dejected heads:<lb/> The Tulips, Daysies, and the Heliotropes<lb/> Of ev'ry kinde, their closed Leaves display;<lb/> And (as it were) with new-recover'd hopes,<lb/> Attend upon the Ruler of the Day.<lb/> Againe, when either in the West he shrowds<lb/> His Rayes below this Horizon, or hides<lb/> His Face behinde the Curtaines of the Cloudes ;<lb/> They lose their beauties, and abate their prides.<lb/> Thus fares it with a Nation, and their King,<lb/> 'Twixt whom there is a native Sympathy.<lb/> His Presence, and his Favours, like the Spring,<lb/> Doe make them sweetly thrive, and fructify:<lb/> Yea (like fresh Groves, or Flow'rs of pleasing hew)<lb/> Themselves in all their jollity they showe;<lb/> But, they, if with displeasure, them he view,<lb/> Soone lose their Glory, and contemned growe.<lb/> All, are not Heliotropes that favour'd growe,<lb/> In Princes Courts; nor Marigolds, that beare<lb/> The golden blossomes; but some spring below,<lb/> Like Daysie flow'rs, that in the Pathwayes are:<lb/> Yet all shall feele it, when their Sov'raignes eye<lb/> Doth frowne, or smile, regard, or else neglect:<lb/> Yea, it will finde them in Obscurity,<lb/> By some Disheartning, or some sweet Effect.<lb/> Vouchsafe to shine on Mee, my Gracious King,<lb/> And then my Wither'd Leaves, will freshly spring.<lb/> </p> |
