<p>If any covet knowledge of that Path,<lb/> Which thither tends, where Peace her dwelling hath,<lb/> This Emblem (being well observ'd) will show<lb/> On whether side, it will be best to goe.<lb/> The Left-hand way, seemes to be walk'd, at ease,<lb/> Through Lawnes, and Downes, and green-swath'd Passages;<lb/> And, much allures the Traveller, to trie<lb/> The many Pleasures, which doe that Way lye.<lb/> The Right-hand-course, is through a Pathlesse-mound<lb/> Of newly ploughed, and deep-furrow'd Ground;<lb/> Which, as uneasie seemeth, to be gone,<lb/> As, in appearance, rough to looke upon.<lb/> Yet, this is Vertue's Path : This Way uneven,<lb/> Is that, which unto ev'ry man is given,<lb/> To travaile in; and, hath a safer ending,<lb/> Then those, whereon more Pleasures are attending:<lb/> And (though it leades us thither, where we see<lb/> Few promises of outward Glories bee)<lb/> It brings (us when we passe the common sight)<lb/> Through easy Tracts, to gaine our Hearts delight.<lb/> The other Way (though seeming streight, it lyes,<lb/> To Pleasure's Pallaces, before our eyes)<lb/> Hath many rubs, and perills, which betweene<lb/> Our Hopes, and Vs, will alwayes lurke unseene;<lb/> Till we are drawne so farre, that 'twill be vaine,<lb/> To seeke, with safety, to returne againe.<lb/> This, let us heed; and, still be carefull, too,<lb/> Which Course it most concerneth us to goe.<lb/> And, though the Left-hand-way, more smoothnesse hath,<lb/> Let us goe forward, in the Right-hand-path.<lb/> </p>
