<p>When wee should use a Ruler, or a Square,<lb/> Or such like Instruments, as usefull are,<lb/> In forming other things; we prize not so<lb/> The carving, or the colourable show<lb/> (Which makes them beautifull in outward sight)<lb/> As when, for Vsefulnesse, we finde them right.<lb/> A warped Bowe, though strung with silken threads,<lb/> And, crooked Arrowes, tipt with Golden heads,<lb/> Delight not Archers ; tyet, such uselesse Toyes<lb/> Be fit enough for Bunglers, and for Boyes.<lb/> A skilfull Artist (in what Art soe're,<lb/> He seekes, to make his ablenesse appeare)<lb/> Will give large Prices, with much more content,<lb/> To buy a plaine (if perfect) Instrument ;<lb/> Then, take for nothing (or, for thankes alone)<lb/> An uselesse Toole, though, gay to looke upon.<lb/> From whence, observe; that, if there must be sought,<lb/> When meere Mechanick-workes are to be wrought,<lb/> Such Instruments, as rather have esteeme<lb/> For their true-being, then for what they seeme.<lb/> Much more, should all those Rules be such, whereby<lb/> Wee goe about, our selves to rectify;<lb/> And, build up, what in Body, or in minde,<lb/> We may defective, or impaired finde.<lb/> Else, peradventure, that we thinke to mend,<lb/> More faulty may become, at later end.<lb/> But, hence, I chiefly learne, to take a care,<lb/> My Life, and Actions, rather be sincere,<lb/> Then seeming such: And, yet, Ile thinke no shame,<lb/> To seeme, to be as honest, as I am.<lb/> </p>
