<p>If this nigh-wasted Candle, you shall view,<lb/> And, heed it well, it may enlighten you<lb/> To looke with more compassion, on their paines,<lb/> Who rob themselves, to multiply your gaines.<lb/> The Taper burnes, to give another light,<lb/> Ev'n till it selfe, it hath consumed quite;<lb/> And, all the profit, which it thence doth winne,<lb/> Is to be snufft, by ev'ry Commer-in.<lb/> This is the Lot of some, whom I have knowne,<lb/> Who, freely, all their life-time, have bestowne<lb/> In such industrious labour, as appeares,<lb/> To further others profits, more then theirs;<lb/> And, all their Patrimonies, well nigh spent,<lb/> The ruining of others, to prevent.<lb/> The wit, the strength, and all the pow'r they had,<lb/> (Which might, by probability, have made<lb/> Good meanes to raise them, in this world, as high,<lb/> As most, who climbe to wealthy dignity)<lb/> Ev'n these, they have bestow'd, to better them,<lb/> Who their indeavours, for their paines, contemne.<lb/> These are those Lamps, whose flames, from time to time,<lb/> Have through each Age, and through-our ev'ry Clime,<lb/> To one another, that true Light convey'd,<lb/> Which Ignorance, had, els, long since betray'd<lb/> To utter darknesse. These, despightfull Pride<lb/> Oft snuffs; and, oft, to put them out, hath try'd.<lb/> But, from the brightnesse of such Lights, as they,<lb/> We got our Light of knowledge, at this day.<lb/> To them, God make us kinder; and to Him,<lb/> More thankfull, that we gain'd such light by them.<lb/> </p> |
