<p>This is a well-knowne Figure, signifying,<lb/> A man, whose Vertues will abide the trying:<lb/> For, by the nature of the Diamond stone,<lb/> (Which, Violence, can no way worke upon)<lb/> That Patience, and long-suffering is intended,<lb/> Which will not bee with Injuries offended;<lb/> Nor yeeld to any base dejectednesse,<lb/> Although some bruising Pow'r, the same oppresse;<lb/> Or, such hard streights, as theirs, that hamm'rings feele,<lb/> Betwixt an Anvile, and a Sledge of Steele.<lb/> None ever had a perfect Vertue, yet,<lb/> But, that most Pretious-stone, which God hath set<lb/> On his right hand, in beaming-Majestie,<lb/> Vpon the Ring of blest ETERNITIE.<lb/> And, this, is that impenitrable Stone,<lb/> The Serpent could not leave impression on,<lb/> (Nor signe of any Path-way ) by temptations,<lb/> Or, by the pow'r of sly insinuations:<lb/> Which wondrous Mysterie was of those five,<lb/> Whose depth King Solomon could never dive.<lb/> Good God! vouchsafe, ev'n for that Diamond -sake,<lb/> That, I may of his pretiousnesse, partake,<lb/> In all my Trialls, make mee alwayes able<lb/> To bide them, with a minde impenitrable,<lb/> How hard, or oft so'ere, those hamm'rings bee,<lb/> Wherewith Affections must new fashion mee.<lb/> And, as the common Diamonds polish'd are,<lb/> By their owne dust; so, let my errours weare<lb/> Each other out; And, when that I am pure,<lb/> Give mee the Lustre, Lord, that will endure.<lb/> </p>
