<p>This is that fruitfull Plant, which when it growes,<lb/> Where wholesome Water in abundance flowes,<lb/> Was, by the Psalmist, thought a likely Tree,<lb/> The Emblem, of a blessed-man, to bee:<lb/> For, many wayes, it fitly typifies,<lb/> The Righteous-man, with his proprieties;<lb/> And, those true Vertues, which doe helpe increase<lb/> His growing, in the state of Blessednesse.<lb/> The Palme, (in this our Emblem, figur'd, thus)<lb/> Depressed with a Stone, doth shew to us<lb/> The pow'r of Truth : For, as this Tree doth spread,<lb/> And thrive the more, when weights presse downe the head;<lb/> So, Gods eternall Truth (which all the pow'r<lb/> And spight of Hell, did labour to devoure)<lb/> Sprung high, and flourished the more, thereby,<lb/> When Tyrants crush'd it, with their crueltie.<lb/> And, all inferiour Truths, the same will doe,<lb/> According as they make approaches to<lb/> The best Perfection ; or, as they conduce<lb/> To God's due praise, or some such pious use.<lb/> Lord, still, preserve this Truth's -integritie,<lb/> Although on ev'ry side, the wicked prie,<lb/> To spie how they may disadvantage it.<lb/> Yea, Lord, though Sinners in high place doe sit,<lb/> (As David saith) yet, let them not oppresse)<lb/> Thy Veritie, by their imperiousnesse.<lb/> But, make both Her, and her Professors, bide<lb/> The Test, like Silver seven times purifide.<lb/> That, all Truths lovers, may with comfort see,<lb/> Shee may deprest, but, not, oppressed bee.<lb/> </p>
