<p>The World hath shamelesse Boasters, who pretend,<lb/> In sundry matters, to be skill'd so well,<lb/> That, were they pleased, so their houres to spend,<lb/> They say, they could in many things excell.<lb/> But, though they make their hearers to beleeve,<lb/> That, out of Modestie their Gifts they hide,<lb/> In them wee very plainely may perceive,<lb/> Or Sloth, or Envy, Ignorance, or Pride.<lb/> When other mens endeavours they peruse,<lb/> They either carpe at what they cannot mend;<lb/> Or else of Arrogance doe those accuse,<lb/> Who, to the publike view, their Workes commend.<lb/> If these men say, that they can Poetize,<lb/> But, will not; they are false in saying so:<lb/> For, he, whose Wit a little that way lies,<lb/> Will doing bee, though hee himselfe undoe.<lb/> If they, in other Faculties are learned,<lb/> And, still, forbeare their Talents to imploy;<lb/> The truest Knowledge, yet, is undiscerned,<lb/> And, that, they merit not, which they injoy.<lb/> Yea, such as hide the Gifts they have received,<lb/> (Or use them not, as well as they are able)<lb/> Are like fayre Eyes, of usefull sight bereaved;<lb/> Or, lighted-Candles, underneath a Table.<lb/> Their glorioust part, is but a Painted cloath,<lb/> Whose Figures, to the wall-ward, still are hung.<lb/> Their hidden Vertues, are apparant Sloth ;<lb/> And, all their life, is to the publike wrong:<lb/> For, they doe reape the Fruits, by many sowne,<lb/> And, leave to others, nothing of their owne.<lb/> </p>
