<p>When, with a serious musing, I behold<lb/> The gratefull, and obsequious Marigold,<lb/> How duely, ev'ry morning, she displayes<lb/> Her open brest, when Titan spreads his Rayes;<lb/> How she observes him in his daily walke,<lb/> Still bending towards him, her tender stalke;<lb/> How, when he downe declines, she droopes and mournes,<lb/> Bedew'd (as 'twere) with teares, till he returnes;<lb/> And, how she vailes her Flow'rs, when he is gone,<lb/> As if she scorned to be looked on<lb/> By an inferiour Eye ; or, did contemne<lb/> To wayt upon a meaner Light, then Him.<lb/> When this I meditate, me-thinkes, the Flowers<lb/> Have spirits, farre more generous, then ours;<lb/> And, give us faire Examples, to despise<lb/> The servile Fawnings, and Idolatries,<lb/> Wherewith, we court these earthly things below,<lb/> Which merit not the service we bestow.<lb/> But, oh my God! though groveling I appeare<lb/> Vpon the Ground, (and have a rooting here,<lb/> Which hales me downward) yet in my desire,<lb/> To that, which is above mee, I aspire:<lb/> And, all my best Affections I professe<lb/> To Him, that is the Sunne of Righteousnesse.<lb/> Oh! keepe the Morning of his Incarnation,<lb/> The burning Noone-tide of his bitter Passion,<lb/> The Night of his Descending, and the Height<lb/> Of his Ascension, ever in my sight:<lb/> That imitating him, in what I may,<lb/> I never follow an inferiour Way.<lb/> </p>
