<p>Would you not laugh, and thinke it beastly fine,<lb/> To see a durtie, and ill-favour'd Swine,<lb/> Weare on her snout, a Diamond, or a Pearle,<lb/> That might become the Ladie of an Earle ?<lb/> And hold it head, as if it meant to show<lb/> It were the Pigg of some well-nurtur'd Sow ?<lb/> Perhaps, you thinke there be not any where<lb/> Such Antickes, but in this our Emblem here.<lb/> But, if you take these Charmes, and then goe forth<lb/> Among some troupes, which passe for folkes of worth,<lb/> You shall discover, quickly, if you please,<lb/> A thousand sights, as mimicall as these.<lb/> Here, you shall see a noble Title worne,<lb/> (That had not mis-beseem'd one better borne)<lb/> By him, whose vertues are of little price,<lb/> And, whose estate, was gotten by his Vice.<lb/> You shall behold another Mushrome, there,<lb/> Walke with our Lords, as if hee were their Peere,<lb/> That was well knowne, to be but tother day,<lb/> No fit companion for such men as they;<lb/> And, had no other meanes to climbe this height,<lb/> But Gaming, or to play the Parasite.<lb/> Yet (though he neither hath his Trade, nor Lands,<lb/> Nor any honest In come, by his hands )<lb/> Hee, oft consumes at once, in Games or Cheare,<lb/> More than would keepe his Better all the yeare.<lb/> Yea, many such as these, thou shouldst behold,<lb/> Which would bee vext, if I describe them should:<lb/> For, thus, unworthily, blind Fortune flings,<lb/> To Crowes, and Geese, and Swine, her precious things.<lb/> </p> |
