<p>This vulgar Figure of a winged glasse,<lb/> Doth signifie, how swiftly Time doth passe.<lb/> By that leane Scull, which to this houre-glasse clings,<lb/> We are informed what effect it brings;<lb/> And, by the Words about it, wee are taught<lb/> To keepe our latter ending still in thought.<lb/> The common houre-glasse, of the Life of Man,<lb/> Exceedeth not the largenesse of a span.<lb/> The Sand -like Minutes, flye away so fast,<lb/> That, yeares are out, e're wee thinke months are past:<lb/> Yea, many times, our nat'rall-day is gone,<lb/> Before wee look'd for twelve a clocke at Noone ;<lb/> And, where wee sought for Beautie, at the Full,<lb/> Wee finde the Flesh quite rotted from the Skull.<lb/> Let these Expressions of Times passage, bee<lb/> Remembrancers for ever, Lord, to mee;<lb/> That, I may still bee guiltlesse of their crime,<lb/> Who fruitlesly consume their precious Time :<lb/> And, minde my Death ; not with a slavish feare,<lb/> But, with a thankfull use, of life-time, here:<lb/> Not grieving, that my dayes away doe post;<lb/> But, caring rather, that they bee not lost,<lb/> And, lab'ring with Discretion, how I may<lb/> Redeeme the Time, that's vainely slipt away.<lb/> So, when that moment comes, which others dread,<lb/> I, undismay'd, shall climbe my dying-bed ;<lb/> With joyfull Hopes, my Flesh to dust commend;<lb/> In Spirit, with a stedfast Faith ascend;<lb/> And, whilst I living am, to sinne so dye,<lb/> That dying, I may live eternally.<lb/> </p>
