<p>The Sword, to bee an Emblem, here, we draw,<lb/> Of that Authoritie, which keeps in awe<lb/> Our Countries Enemies; and, those that are<lb/> The Foes of Peace, as well as those of Warre ;<lb/> That, Peace may give the Law of Armes her due,<lb/> And, Warre, to Civill-pow'rs, respect may shew.<lb/> For, Kingdomes, nor in Warre not Peace, can stand,<lb/> Except the Sword have alway some command:<lb/> Yea, that, for which our forraine Spoylers come,<lb/> Domesticke Foes, will else devoure at home;<lb/> And, stranger-drones the peacefull Bees will harme,<lb/> Vnlesse with warlike stings, themselves they arme.<lb/> Considering this, let none bee so unwise,<lb/> The Swords well us'd protection to despise:<lb/> Or, thinke the practice of this double-guard,<lb/> In any place, or age, may well bee spar'd.<lb/> Let not the Sword-man sleight the pow'rfull Crowne ;<lb/> Nor Cowne-men cast the Sword out of their Towne,<lb/> Because it terrifies, or draweth Blood;<lb/> For, otherwhile Phlebotomy is good:<lb/> And, though to kill a Lowse, the Bandams feare;<lb/> (Though Anabaptist, love no Sword to weare)<lb/> Yet, being drawne, to fright, or cut off Sinne,<lb/> It may bee brandish'd by a Cherubin.<lb/> However, from the Sword divide not you<lb/> (In any case) the peacefull Olive bough :<lb/> That is, let Peace, at all times, be that End,<lb/> For which, to draw the Sword you doe intend;<lb/> And, for well-doing, bee as ready, still,<lb/> To give rewards, as blowes, for doing-ill.<lb/> </p>
