<p>It is this Emblems meaning, to advance<lb/> The love and practise, of true Temperance.<lb/> For, by this Figure (which doth seeme to fill,<lb/> Vntill the liquor overflow, and spill)<lb/> Wee are, as by example, taught to see<lb/> How fruitlesse our Intemperancies bee:<lb/> Thus by the Rule of Contrarieties,<lb/> Some Vertues, best are showne to vulgar eyes.<lb/> To see a nastie Drunkard, reele and spew,<lb/> More moves to Sobernesse, than can the view<lb/> Of twentie civill men; and, to behold<lb/> One Prodigall, (that goodly lands hath fold)<lb/> Stand torne and louzie, begging at the dore,<lb/> Would make Intemperance abhorred more,<lb/> (And, manly Sobernesse, much better, each)<lb/> Than all that fixe Philosophers can preach:<lb/> So, by the Vessels overflowing, here,<lb/> True Moderation doth more prais'd appeare,<lb/> Than by the meane it selfe: And, without sinne,<lb/> That's pictur'd, which to doe, had wicked bin,<lb/> For, though to vertuous ends; wee doe deny<lb/> The Doing-ill, that Good may come thereby.<lb/> From hence, let us be taught, that carefull heed,<lb/> Whereby wee should both Minde and Bodie, feed.<lb/> Let us, of our owne selves, observe the size;<lb/> How much wee want, how little will suffize;<lb/> And, our owne longings, rather leave unfill'd,<lb/> Than suffer any portion to bee spill'd:<lb/> For, what we marre, shall to account be layd,<lb/> And, what wee wisely spend, shall be repayd.<lb/> </p>
